Man charged with raping 11-year-old he met on Tinder

Man accused of raping child he met online

DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - A Greendale man is spending his 21st birthday behind bars, accused of raping and molesting an 11-year-old girl.

Travis McAdams had his first encounter with the underage girl online, said Dearborn County Prosecuting Attorney Lynn Deddens. Detectives say he met her on the Tinder dating App.

“It’s my understanding the 11-year-old had portrayed herself as a 16-year-old on the Tinder app and once they had met through Tinder they began to chat through SnapChat,” said Deddens.

The Probable Cause Affidavit states that the 11-year-old and McAdams continued to communicate and sometime in late December 2017 or early January 2018 the two met at the Greendale Cinema. The 11-year-old told detectives she walked away to use the bathroom and when she walked out of the restroom she stated that McAdams put his arm around her neck, covered her mouth and took her to the back of the building where he raped her.

Police after the alleged rape the 11-year-old met up with McAdams again. Det. Sgt. Kendle Davis with Greendale police says McAdams was aware of the child’s true age and continued to see her knowing that she was 11 years old.

“She advised me that she was scared of McAdams and that’s why she continued to see him a couple of other occasions after this because she was afraid of what he might do to her,” said Davis.

According to the affidavit the 11-year-old’s mother learned of the alleged rape and reported it to police in March.

“The mother did relay to us that she confronted the subject via phone because he contacted her and he didn’t want her to file charges and was attempting to talk her out of it,” said Davis.

Police say it took a while to obtain search warrants, which delayed McAdams' arrest.

Police are now warning other parents to stay alert and to pay attention to who your children are talking to online.

“Watch their social media accounts. There are apps out there now to look different. If you look on a child’s app and it shows a clock it’s actually a hidden file where kids can hide SnapChat accounts or Tinder accounts and other similar accounts, so their parents might not even be aware they have it,” said Davis.

McAdams is being held at the Dearborn County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond and $500,000 surety bond. He is charged with felony rape and child molesting. Each charge can carry a penalty of three to 16 years.

Police say since his arrest on Dec. 14, more women have come forward with similar accusations. A trial date has not been set yet.
