Josh McDaniels says ‘no thanks’ to Bengals interview, NFL insiders say
Patriots offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels turned down the Bengals request to interview for their head-coaching spot, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Bengals fans are eagerly anticipating an announcement on the team’s next head coach. One coach that won’t be filling Marvin Lewis' old spot? The Patriots' Josh McDaniels.

NFL Network reporter and Good Morning Football weekend host Mike Garafolo says Tom Brady’s coach passed on Cincinnati’s request for an interview.

McDaniels is the current offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Patriots. His highly coveted status among NFL teams comes from being Tom Brady’s main man for the majority of the last nearly two decades.

The five-time Super Bowl champion coach began his time with New England in 2002 as a defensive assistant before moving to quarterbacks coach in 2004. He took over the role of Offensive coordinator in 2006, but left to takeover as head coach of the Broncos in 2009.

McDaniels returned to the New England sideline in 2012 after a brief stint as OC in St. Louis.

In 2018, McDaniels drew criticism and sparked controversy when he backed out of an agreement to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and decided to stay with the Patriots.

The only team that appears to be sparking interest for McDaniels is the Packers.

CBS Boston reports McDaniels will interview with Green Bay during the Patriots' playoff bye week.

Though McDaniels turned down the interview request, the Bengals are busy interviewing the candidates that accepted their invitation.

NFL insiders announced Wednesday the team interviewed former Browns head coach, current Bengals assistant and close friend of Marvin Lewis, Hue Jackson.

The Bengals are scheduled to interview former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph Thursday and Friday, ESPN NFL insider Josina Anderson reports.

The team will interview Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Bengal Eric Bieniemy Friday, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport said.

Of the current candidates for head coach, Bieniemy has the most interest from other NFL teams.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Wednesday evening they’d completed their interview with Bieniemy. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Bieniemy completed his interview with the New York Jets Wednesday afternoon.

Rapoport says Bieniemy is also scheduled to interview with the Miami Dolphins at some point.
