Covington man arrested after two-hour standoff

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Covington Police have arrested a man after a two-hour standoff at a house on York and Pike Streets in Covington.

Police arrived on the scene just before noon, looking for Paul Smith, according to Covington Police.

Smith was wanted for failure to register, parole violation, and had a warrant for receiving stolen property, said police.

Police say that Smith told them he was not going to surrender and the cops would have to kill him.

After a two-hour standoff, SWAT teams decided to use gasses to get Smith to surrender, police say.

Smith was taken into custody without incident but was treated at the scene for injuries from gas, police said.

Smith is currently in the Kenton County Jail.
