Police chief dies in crash

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The chief of the Rising Sun, Indiana Police Department was killed in a single vehicle accident early Thursday morning, according to the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says the accident happened along State Road 56 near Spring Branch Road around 7:20 a.m.

The driver, David P. Hewitt, 49, of Florence, Ind., was taken by helicopter from the scene but died at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Kentucky.

Hewitt was the current serving chief of the Rising Sun Police Department, according to the sheriff’s office.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation but the sheriff’s office says icy road conditions are believed to have been a factor.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office at (812) 427-3636.

In a statement, Rising Sun Mayor Brent Bascom says Chief Hewitt served southeastern Indiana for 27 years as a police officer for the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office, the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, the Lawrenceburg Police Department and the Rising Sun Police Department.

Hewitt was employed by the Rising Sun Police Department in 1998 and named Chief of Police in 2004.

“On behalf of the City of Rising Sun, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Chief Hewitt’s family. I ask that everyone please respect the privacy of Chief Hewitt’s family and that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tragic loss,” Mayor Bascom said.

Bascom has ordered that all flags in the City of Rising Sun be lowered to half-staff and remain at half-staff for a period of 27 days, one day for each year of Chief Hewitt’s service.
