Robotic vacuum to blame for KY house fire?

Victim: Robotic vacuum started fire

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - A northern Kentucky mother believes her robotic vacuum is responsible for her house going up in flames.

“I was in the shower when I heard an alarm going off and I just thought it was the actual robot because it has an alarm if it gets stuck somewhere,” said Megan Price. “I saw smoke from behind my couch and I noticed that there was flames underneath coming from the robot vacuum.”

The mother of two was home alone at the time of the Thursday afternoon blaze. Price tells FOX19 she ran upstairs got dressed and was out of the house in 30 seconds as firefighters and police arrived on scene.

The robotic vacuum was bought on Thanksgiving Day of 2018 and Price tells us the machine is a Deebot Ecovac. FOX19 has reached out to the company via email for comment and has not received a response.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Fort Thomas officials. The vacuum has been taken as evidence.

“It’s going to be looked at by our fire investigation team, that is down the road in the future," said Fort Thomas Police Lt. Rich Whitford.

Officials say the fire could have had a much different outcome if it weren’t for the fire alarms installed in the home.

“If that fire alarm ... wasn’t working, not installed … she might have died,” Lt. Whitford said.

Price says the community has really stepped up to help replace what was lost. Currently a GoFundMe has been started. A local school is collecting clothing in the children’s sizes and Midway Café is planning a fundraiser on Feb. 22.
