DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - An East Central High School student was killed in a Thursday morning single-vehicle crash, according to Dearborn County authorities.

The incident took place along State Route 1, near Whitaker Lane. Bretton Fox, 18, was traveling northbound around 8 a.m. when he hit a patch of ice in his truck and lost control, authorities said.

They say the vehicle went into an embankment, rolled onto its side, and struck a tree.

“We sent additional deputies to the school this morning to help support the students and staff,” said Dearborn County Sheriff Shane McHenry. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fox family and the students and staff at East Central High School.”

Fox, a senior at East Central High, was captain of the football team.

“Brett Fox was a dynamic young man that excelled on the football field as our Team Captain, All-Conference and Academic All-State player. He was a leader amongst the student body with his enthusiasm and school spirit. He will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” said Coach Don Stonefield.

Principal Tom Black described Fox as a fine young man who was a leader in many ways.

“No words truly quantify the loss of any student,” he said. “Brett will certainly be missed.”

The school will have additional counselors and ministers on-site Friday and next week to support students and staff.

A fund has been set up for the Fox family in Dearborn County at the Civista Bank. It’s called the Fox Family Fund.
