MASON, OH (FOX19) - Many are showing support for the family of a girl who died after she was diagnosed with strep throat and the flu earlier this week.
Western Row Elementary School leaders say Sable Gibson was diagnosed earlier this week, went into cardiac arrest, and died a day later.
The 10-year-old was in fourth grade. School officials say her classmates were made aware of her death Thursday morning.
Sable was described by her classmates as a nice, funny, caring, and very special girl.
“She was naturally just a light,” said Mason City School public information officer Tracey Carson. “And when you look at her smile you see that and how it just shined bright on everyone. She was spunky and sweet and is going to be so very missed."
Western Row was a sea of pink Thursday to honor Sable -- it was her favorite color. Students made cards, shared some memories and created video messages that school officials say will be played at her funeral.
“Every student that I kept hearing from was talking about what an incredible friend she was -- that she was genuinely kind to everyone," said Carson.
As the Mason community continues to try and process Sable’s sudden loss, counselors were on hand at the school assisting anyone who may have needed someone to talk to.
Warren County Health Department officials say they have been made aware of Sable’s death. They say it’s very unusual for something like this to happen to a child.
