Fire damages cargo plane at Ohio Air Force base

Associated Press - March 27, 2009 9:55 PM ET

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The Air Force says an apparent electrical fire broke out aboard a parked C-5 Galaxy cargo plane at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton.

Maj. Cynthia Harris, spokeswoman for the 445th Airlift Wing, says Friday's fire occurred during a routine check of an auxiliary power unit. Maintenance workers immediately put it out using a hand-held fire extinguisher.

Harris says six maintenance workers were evacuated. No one was injured.

She did not have a damage estimate.

Harris says the plane will not be flown until repairs and inspections are done.

Wright-Patterson is home to 10 of the C-5 planes, the largest in the Air Force fleet. They can carry tanks and helicopters inside and are regularly flown overseas.
