Homer Simpson to lead Chicken Dance at Oktoberfest

Posted: Updated:

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Homer Simpson is going to lead the World's Largest Chicken Dance at the 2009 Oktoberfest: Zinzinnati.

The event is Sunday, Sept. 20 on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati.

"Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati has long been regarded as the largest Oktoberfest celebration in North America and the second largest in the world," said Patrick Sheeran, vice president with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. "And as America's Oktoberfest, it only makes sense to have America's favorite sitcom father lead the festivities."

This is the first time in the history of the World's Largest Chicken Dance that a cartoon character will lead the dance.

The Simpsons, celebrating its 20th year, is the longest-running sitcom, animated program and primetime entertainment series in American television history.  Homer, the patriarch of the family, is a cultural icon, having graced everything from Christmas ornaments to postage stamps.

Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati showcases the rich German heritage the Queen City. More than half-a-million visitors come downtown each year to eat, drink, listen to live music and perform the Chicken Dance. The event will feature five stages showcasing continuous live German music, more than 40 food and drink vendors and more than 800 barrels of beer-roughly the annual capacity of some popular microbreweries.

Homer Simpson joins an all-star cast of celebrities who have served as the grand marshal and led the World's Largest Chicken Dance, including the Crown Prince of Bavaria, trumpeter Al Hirt, Weird Al Yankovic, Davy Jones, Tony Orlando, Verne Troyer (a.ka. Mini Me), Vince Neil, Chad Johnson, Joe Nuxhall and Olympians Mary Wineberg and David Payne.

The festival runs Saturday, Sept. 19 to Sunday, Sept. 20. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
