BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - A Clermont County couple was sentenced Tuesday for the death of their 11-day-old daughter.

Samantha Smith and John Foster will each spend four years behind bars.

Investigators say their daughter, Caroline, died in December 2008 of blunt force trauma. It was first thought the infant suffered from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), but further investigation revealed foul play.

In court on Friday, prosecutors say Smith admitted in a suicide note that she squeezed the baby in the stomach. The couple also admitted to not taking the infant to the doctor a few days prior to her death.

They could have received up to 23 years in prison.
