CDC recommending pneumococcal vaccine

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, DC (FOX NEWS) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is adding one more shot to their list of recommended vaccines.

The CDC says to get the pneumococcal vaccine, too, because autopsies show nearly 30 percent of H1N1 swine flu victims bacterial infections. This shot protects against pneumococcus, a bacterial pneumonia infection.

The CDC wants doctors who treat severe H1N1 cases with signs of pneumonia to use not only antivirals for the flu virus, but also antibiotics for the bacteria.

TheCDC says about 70 million people are at risk of the bacterial infection, including people between 18 and 49, the prime ages for swine flu.

But only 16 percent of them have had their pneumococcal vaccine.
