COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - State agriculture officials say Ohio's apple crop is slightly smaller than last year's, but the overall quality is very strong.
Ohio's 136 apple orchards are projected to produce 99 million pounds of apples this year, compared with 104 million pounds in 2008.
The state's apple crop was valued at $37.6 million last year.
Apple harvesting began in mid-August and will continue through the beginning of November.
Officials say the quality of this year's fruit is great because the growing season progressed well without any frost damage.
Ohio is the ninth largest apple-producing state in the country.
