CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Ohioans have voted to put casinos in Ohio.
Casinos will be built in the state's four largest cities - Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo. An economic impact study commissioned by the campaign predicted nearly 40,000 temporary and permanent jobs and $4 billion in economic impact, though social costs were not considered.
The plan is to build a casino in Cincinnati at Broadway Commons.
Voters approved two other issues, the livestock care board and bonuses for veterans.
The livestock care board, or Issue 2, approves a new industry-dominated board to oversee livestock care. Veterans benefits, or Issue 1, approves bonuses of up to $1,000 for those who served in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq.
In the Queen City, voters re-elected Mark Mallory as mayor. Mallory faced a challenge from Iraq war veteran Brad Wenstrup, who was ahead as early votes came in. However, Mallory pulled away and easily defeated Wenstrup.
Nineteen Cincinnati residents were vying for nine city council spots. Incumbents Roxanne Qualls, Cecil Thomas, Chris Bortz, Jeff Berding, Leslie Ghiz, Chris Monzel and Laketa Cole were re-elected. Charlie Winburn and Laure Quinlivan also join council, replacing David Crowley and Greg Harris. Crowley was not running for re-election; Harris got the 10th-most votes.
The other hot issue in Cincinnati was Issue 9, known as the streetcar issue. The ballot contained confusing language, as voters had to vote 'no' to vote in favor of light rail and 'yes' to not vote in favor. Residents voted in support of the rail system.
Hamilton County voters also passed the MRDD levy, the Union Terminal levy and the Public Library levy with commanding numbers.
School levies were mixed throughout the region. Voters approved a levy for the Cincinnati Public School system. Levies for Mount Healthy, Reading and Winton Woods were all approved. Levies for the Little Miami Local School District, Batavia Local School District and Bethel-Tate School District did not pass.
