Cincinnati Public Schools closed Tuesday

By Richard Todd email

Cincinnati (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Public Schools have closed Tuesday morning due to the weather.  While it's hardly unusual for the schools to close after such a significant storm, it's a little unusual to decide this many hours before morning.

Here is the release from CPS:

Cincinnati Public Schools to Close Tuesday Due to Hazardous Conditions

Cincinnati Public Schools will be closed for students on Tuesday (February 16, 2010) due to heavy snow accumulations and untreated residential streets that pose hazardous conditions for both bus riders and walkers.

"As of early Monday evening, the snow continues to fall, and an additional one to three inches is predicted by midnight. Residential streets are in extremely poor condition, with little prospect of being treated by school start times," said Superintendent Mary Ronan. "In addition to the transportation hazards, the cold and heavy snow accumulations are of concern for students who would be waiting at bus stops as well as those who walk to school. Because it's highly unlikely that these conditions will improve much overnight, we are making the decision to cancel school on Tuesday in the interest of student safety."

The State of Ohio has provided districts with five calamity days this school year to use for inclement weather and other emergencies. This is the fifth calamity day CPS has used in the 2009-10 school year. If the district is required to call off school again this school year, CPS will need to schedule additional time to its school calendar to make up the missed days, most likely by adding days to the end of the year.

Through its yellow bus vendor, First Student, and Metro, CPS transports about 23,000 students attending district, charter and nonpublic schools, covering more than 5 million miles annually.
