Crews detonate illegal fireworks in Lockland

LOCKLAND, OH (FOX19) - Crews detonated a suspicious device Friday morning that turned out to be homemade illegal fireworks.

A worker at an industrial park in the 600 block of Shepherd Drive in Lockland was taking out some trash around 9 a.m. when he noticed the suspicious device in a dumpster.

The worker called 911 and the Cincinnati Fire Department's bomb unit was called to the scene.

Crews determined the device to be illegal homemade fireworks with two fuses that were in an ammo can.

"They X-rayed that device, that can that they found out there and they did find two devices on the inside of that," said Lockland Fire Chief James Benjamin.

Around 10:30 a.m., crews detonated the device.

"These were pretty good size," said Benjamin. "The disposal team said that if they were to have gone off or a child or somebody would have found it, it definitely would have taken off a hand or something like that."

Several nearby businesses were evacuated for about an hour, but no one was injured.

Investigators say they have no idea how long the device had been there and it will be up to Lockland Police to determine who put the device in the dumpster.
