INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Colts put running backs Vick Ballard and Deji Karim and offensive lineman Ulrick John on injured reserve yesterday. The moves helped the team reach the NFL's 75-player roster limit. Indy also placed starting fullback Stanley Havili on the physically unable to perform list.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Coach Chuck Pagano says the Colts already have a plan for Robert Mathis to follow when his four-game suspension begins Saturday. The NFL notified Mathis and the Colts this spring that the reigning NFL sacks champ would miss the first four regular season games because he used a banned performance-enhancing substance. Mathis claims he was using a fertility drug.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Five first-year freshmen are expected to see significant playing time Saturday when Purdue opens the season against Western Michigan in Ross-Ade Stadium. Each team is coming off a 1-11 season. Coach Darrell Hazell also says sophomore wide receiver Cameron Posey has been suspended for the Western Michigan game for a violation of unspecified team rules.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana has added power forward Emmitt Holt to its new recruiting class. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound freshman was a finalist for New York's Mr. Basketball Award. He averaged 19.8 points, 14.6 rebounds and 5.0 blocks last season at Webster Schroeder High School last season.
