COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

The man wanted for the shooting of a Covington police officer is now in custody.

Friday afternoon, Pharo Wilson, 26 was arrested. Police Chief Spike Jones says Wilson was apprehended at the Fireside Motel on Friday afternoon.

It all started just after 5 a.m. Friday morning in the 2200 block of Todd Court.

Police say Spc. Mark Richardson, 43, was responding to a reported robbery in the City Heights neighborhood.

Gunfire was exchanged between four officers and the suspect.

Police believe Pharo Wilson shot at officers from an elevated position on the second floor on an apartment building. Covington Police Chief Spike Jones says officers were located on an exposed area outside the apartments on ground level.

Spc. Richardson was shot in the foot, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

He is expected to make a full recovery and return to work. Richardson is a 10-year veteran of the Covington Police Department and is a K9 officer.

Shortly after the shooting, police identified Wilson as the suspect and began trying to track him down.

According to Kenton County Jail records, Wilson is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2005 that includes drug charges, assault, escape and disorderly conduct.

Covington Police Chief Spike Jones said he was released from state prison after serving a minimum sentence in 2011 for trafficking in a controlled substance.

All involved officers have been placed on leave according to department policy. Jones says the incident is incredibly rare for Covington. He says the last time an officer was shot and killed in the line of duty was in 1946.

Wilson is being held at the Hamilton County Detention Center. He is charged with assault in the first degree and attempted murder. Wilson will arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the Kenton County Courthouse.
