Animal rights activists are asking a Gary shopping center to cancel a five-ring circus scheduled to take place in the center's parking lot.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claim the Carson & Barnes Circus mistreats elephants and other animal performers. The group is asking the owners of The Commons on 20 to cancel the circus, scheduled for this weekend. However, a spokeswoman for the circus says the company has never violated federal animal cruelty laws.
Shopping center officials say even if they found evidence of animal abuse at the circus, it is too late to cancel the contract.
