Fourteen year old Heather Evans died at Childrens Hospial Wednesday morning.  Evans was in one of the cars involved in Tuesday afternoon's horrible accident on the AA Highway.

The crash sent six people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, some with serious injuries.

It crash happened when a southbound semi hauling a flatbed trailer loaded with steel plates t-boned a Ford Ranger pickup that was coming onto the highway from Poplar Ridge Road.  Investigators on the scene immediately after the crash hadn't determined which driver might have been at fault or exactly how the crash came about.

The impact sent the pickup truck forward and off the right side of the highway, where it landed upside down among trees and bushes. The impact also caused the tractor-trailer to flip.

Coming the opposite way up the hill was a large road crane. When the driver of the crane saw the crash happening, he swerved to the right to avoid it, but when his right wheels went off the right side of the highway, the whole crane flipped. It was never touched by any other vehicle or debris.

When the tractor trailer flipped, the load of steel plates it was carrying skittered down the highway, with at least one of them flying into the front of a passenger car containing two adults and a child. Between this and other material from other vehicles, the debris field on the highway stretched for hundreds of feet.

It took a major rescue effort to get the three injured people out of the pickup truck. Two were flown to the hospital, with the third being driven there. The people in the passenger car seemed to have lesser injuries, but all were taken to the hospital.

Alexandria Police and fire representatives on the scene said there is a history of crashes at this and another nearby intersection on the AA, when people seeing a yellow light speed up to trying to make it through the intersection before it turns red.  They said they didn't know if that kind of thing was any kind of factor in this wreck.

The AA Highway, also known as Kentucky Route 9, is built somewhat like an interstate highway, with high speed limits and some divided sections, but it has occasional cross roads and traffic lights.
