Groups want petition to ban Red Light Cameras

Posted: Updated:

(CINCINNATI) -- Several local groups are uniting to create a petition that would ban Red Light cameras in Cincinnati.

The NAACP, along with the group WeDemandAVote.com, say they want to pass an amendment to the Cincinnati Charter to prevent the used of unmanned red light cameras, which counters a plan announced by Cincinnati City Council in January to implement the use of such devices.

Other groups, including the Southwest Ohio Green Party, Americans for Prosperity - Ohio Chapter and Blue Chip Republicans, joined the effort on Monday. Councilman Chris Monzel also endorsed the effort.

The cameras catch drivers running red lights and the drivers get tickets by mail.

The petition drive needs approximately 8,600 valid signatures to achieve ballot access, which will require more than 12,000 signatures to achieve.
