Kirkland arraigned on murder charges, collapses in court

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A man investigators call a serial killer was arraigned Thursday on three aggravated murder charges.

Anthony Kirkland was indicted by a grand jury on Monday. In court on Thursday, Kirkland pled not guilty to the charges, but as the charges were being read, Kirkland collapsed to the ground.

He was helped back to his feet and the arraignment continued.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters wants him put to death, saying Kirkland deserves nothing less then execution.

He's accused of murdering 13 year old Esme Kenney. He allegedly grabbed her while she was out jogging. She was strangled and her body was burned. Kirkland was found sleeping in the woods 100 yards away. He had her watch and I-pod in his pocket.

Police then tied him to the murder of two other women in 2006, 14-year-old Casonya Crawford and 45-year-old Mary Jo Newton.

Kirkland is a registered sex offender and convicted killer. He was paroled in 2003 after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1987.

He is being held on 5.3 million dollar bond.
