Local soldiers being deployed to Iraq

SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - A local group of Army Reserves is shipping out to Iraq.

Friends and family gathered Tuesday morning at Xavier University to send them off.

The 961st Engineer Company is based in Sharonville and locals make up most of the unit. This is the first deployment for unit, which was 175 members.

Ninety of the soldiers have been deployed before, and for the rest, it's their first time. But no matter how many times they've served overseas, they say it's always difficult, and their families agree.

The soldiers and their families were honored Tuesday during an hour-long ceremony.

Guest speakers included Comman Sergeant Major John Werner, Sharonville Assistant Manager Bobby Fisher and a representative from U.S. Senator George Voinovich's office.

The troops will train at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin for the next 45 days before heading to Iraq. They're expected to return sometime next summer.
