COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -  Covington Commissioner Steve Megerle has resigned from the Covington City Commission.

Megerle handed in his resignation paperwork around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Megerle and two other Covington officials entered guilty pleas last week to violating Kentucky's election finance laws for running a smear campaign against commission candidate Shawn Masters.

A full crowd showed up at Covington's commission meeting on Tuesday, and applauded when City Manager Jay Fossett read Mergele's resignation letter.

Mergele was not at the meeting, but said in a statement, "I again apologize for the events during the 2008 political campaign, and take responsibility for my involvement. My resignation in no way is related to the official performance of my duties as city commissioner."

"What I think his change of heart is why I'm most proud today is the people in our community who rallied behind me and this commission asking for his resignation. We've literally received hundreds of emails and phone calls," said Masters.

"It's not yet decided who will replace Megerle on the four-seat commission. It's up to the three remaining commissioners to appoint that replacement with a unanimous vote.
