COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Two people are in custody as Covington Police investigate a crash involving a Kenton County Sheriff's deputy.

Investigators say that 38-year-old Deputy Bret Lovell was out of his cruiser when he was hit by a truck at the corner of Scott and 10th streets late Wednesday night.

That vehicle was found just a short time later in Newport, and two suspects, a man and woman, were taken into custody.

Jeffrey Beatsch, 42, is charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and menacing. Barbara Flack, 49, is charged with tampering with evidence. Both are being held at the Kenton County Jail.

"We take it very serious, and of course we're optimistic that he's not injured that bad so we're just going to keep working this and devine any facts from the investigation that we can," said Col. Spike Jones with Covington Police.

Lovell's injuries are not considered life threatening. He has been with the Kenton County Sheriff's Office for over three years.
