COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Kentucky Health Department is investigating the first probable case of swine flu in Northern Kentucky.

The probable case involved a young adult female from Kenton County. She was tested for the H1N1 virus at a local hospital.

The patient told the Health Department she has not traveled outside the area or been exposed to another case of swine flu.

A probable swine flu case, as currently defined by the Kentucky Department for Public Health, is declared when a person has a positive test for influenza A and the strain of flu does not match those circulating from seasonal influenza. Samples from the patient are sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation of swine flu H1N1. Results are not expected for several days.

Health Department officials say they will evaluate those who have come into contact with the infected individual for prevention and treatment measures, if needed.

At this time, a total of 1,639 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the U.S., according to the CDC. That includes six cases in Ohio, three cases in Kentucky and 29 cases in Indiana. In addition, many probable and suspect cases of swine flu are being investigated.
