WEST END, OH (FOX19) - A West End weekend shooting suspect is accused of opening fire the same day he walked away from Hamilton county's overcrowded jail.

Police arrested Shan Epps on Friday on misdemeanor charges, including marijuana possession.

But Saturday, the sheriff's office ordered his release to save jail space. Epps is accused of shooting another man in the leg that same afternoon.

"This is a perfect example of what we're trying to prevent, but no one seems to get that at the city," said Cincinnati councilwoman Leslie Ghiz.

Ghiz wants to spend federal stimulus money on electronic ankle bracelets to help with jail overcrowding.

The issue did not receive enough support for a vote last week. Mayor Mark Mallory and several council members believe the county should use their own money.
