RICHWOOD, KY (FOX19) - A routine traffic stop led to a man barricading himself inside a van, causing southbound Interstate 75 to be shut down for a short time on Sunday.

Police say they pulled over George Hamilton, 49, of Stamford, Conn., around 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning at the 176 mile marker. The deputy noticed that Hamilton seemed to be under the influence of stimulants. When the deputy approached the van a second time, Hamilton locked himself in the van and crawled into the back.

Deputies called for additional units and closed all southbound lanes when they say military ammo boxes in the van.

Hamilton surrendered after deputies broke out one of the windows and administered a dose of pepper spray.

Hamilton was charged with reckless driving, suspended operators license, D.U.I., disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and an open container of alcohol. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital Florence for evaluation and will then be taken to the Boone County Jail.
