BETHEL, OH (FOX19) - A local Navy veteran just back from Iraq has died in an apparent murder-suicide.

Clermont County Sheriff A.J. Rodenberg says Debbie Russell was supposed to be in a Memorial Day parade.

She joined the Navy four years ago at age 40 and had just returned in October from a deployment in Iraq. When she didn't show up at Monday's Memorial Day parade, her friends got worried and went looking for her.

At her Bethel home she shared with her husband of six years, the friends peeked through the window and saw a gun and blood on the floor, so they called the sheriff's department.

They say her husband, Kurt Russell, shot and killed Debbie in her bed and then turned the gun on himself in a living room chair.

A commander of the American Legion Post 288 says Debbie was a petty officer in the Navy reserves.

Friends say she had been preparing to go to Australia next for service.
