Speed blamed for fatal Indiana crash

UNION COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - A chase ended in a deadly chase Tuesday night in Union County.

Just after 10:30 p.m., a Connersville trooper clocked a sports car going over 100 miles per hour on U.S. 27 just south of the Wayne County line.

When the officer activated his lights, the vehicle sped away.

The vehicle made a turn onto Mitchell Road and in less than a minute, the car crashed.  The driver, Paul Bertsch Jr., 44, of Liberty, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bertsch's 1999 Porsche went airborne on a small hill and came apart after hitting a tree on the front passenger side. Bertsch was ejected from the car.

Troopers investigated for several hours and toxicology reports are pending.
