MASON, OH (FOX19) - The Mason City Schools' Board of Education has voted to repair the Mason Early Childhood Center, which was damaged in a fire earlier this week.

Investigators say lightning sparked the fire and causes extensive damage to the roof. The building also suffered water damage.

The damage was contained to the first grade special areas.

The board says the total cost of damage is still unknown, but the board is only liable for its $5,000 insurance deductible.

"It was important to move quickly to authorize these urgent repairs because we need to protect the contents and integrity of MECC," said Mike Brannon, Assistant Superintendent of Operations.

While it is highly unusual for school districts to approve contracts without bidding them, the circumstances with the MECC fire created an urgent necessity and need for the completion, and as such the action is in compliance with Ohio Revised Code section 3313.46.

The school board also took time to thank the Mason Fire Department and surrounding departments who assisted in putting out the fire.
