Hamilton County Commissioners approve boat

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Hamilton County commissioners voted 2-1 Wednesday to approve Sheriff Simon Leis' request for a new patrol boat.

Commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper voted in favor of the boat. Commissioner Greg Hartmann voted against it.

Leis wants the $98,000 boat to patrol potential terrorists on the Ohio River. The boat will be paid for with federal grants.

"We do not expect any general fund tax dollars to be spend in maintenance and operation," said Pepper.

Commissioners heard from safety experts on Monday, who told them that the county would struggle to respond if there was an emergency on the Ohio River.

"We know we have vunerabilities like everyone else," said Pepper. "But we are not the most vunerable."

Pepper said he supports the decision after a lot of thought. He said he just wanted the funding to be spent wisely.
