Source: Ohio gov. to announce acceptance of slots

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A source says Gov. Ted Strickland will announce his willingness to accept slot machines as part of the solution to the state's budget deficit.

A source from the Ohio Racing Commission tells the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Strickland plans to make the announcement at a news conference Friday. The source requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about the governor's decision.

Strickland has been against the expansion of gambling as a way to raise revenue for the cash-strapped state. Lawmakers are struggling with ways to fill a roughly $3.2 billion gap in the two-year budget that would begin July 1.

Strickland, as well as legislative leaders of both parties, have said so far that they want to rely on cuts.
