Northern Ky. police to buy moveable cameras

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - A northern Kentucky city is using federal funds to buy portable surveillance cameras for police to use in crime-ridden neighborhoods.

The Newport Police Department received notice of the $15,856 Justice Assistance Grant this month. Newport Police Capt. Pat Moore says officers can attach the cameras to utility poles or any public structure and record around-the-clock activity on the street.

The Kentucky Enquirer reports that police department will move the cameras to where statistical data and officers say there are problems.

Moore said the cameras will only be used to record activity in public on the street. Moore says the footage can be used as evidence in court.
