Gramma Debbie’s Baked Beans with Vidalia Onion Sausage

Gramma Debbie's Baked Beans with Vidalia Onion Sausage

1 lb      Vidalia Onion Sausage (from Kroeger and Sons Meats, of course)

1          Onion, large, chopped or thin sliced

2 cans  Baked Beans (your choice)

1 can    Flat Beans (you can substitute pinto or chili beans)

1 can    Black Beans

1 tbsp  Chili Powder

½ tsp   Cinnamon

2 tbsp  Honey, Maple syrup, or Molasses, or Brown Sugar

1 tsp    Mustard

½ cup  Ketchup

            Bacon, cooked crisp or soft, as to your taste.

Using a large skillet, saute onions over medium high heat to soften.  Stir frequently and do not overcook.

Remove casing from sausage.  Add to skillet and break into bite size pieces, stirring with the onions, for 4 to 5 minutes.

Add Chili Powder and Pepper to skillet, stir to combine.

This dish can be put in a casserole and baked or put in a crock pot and cooked in the crock pot.

Combine all the beans with the onions and sausage, put into the casserole dish or crock pot, lay bacon strips on the top.

If baking, preheat oven to 350° and bake for about 40 minutes. 

If cooking in a crock pot / slow cooker, cook on high for at least 1 hour, or on low for several hours.  Will hold for many hours on warm, once the dish has started bubbling.
