Three arrested in counterfeiting scheme

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19)-- Three people have been arrested and charged after they tried to exchange counterfeit money for real money at a local mall.

On Tuesday around 6:00pm, 28-year-old Derek Borcherding attempted to exchange ten fake $10 dollar bills for five $20 dollar bills at the information booth at the Northgate mall. The mall employee determined that the bills were fake and called security who contacted the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

An investigation led to the arrest of Borcherding,18-year-old David Hall and a 17-year-old juvenile. The other two were also in the mall at the time of the incident. Between Hall and the teen, there were almost $800 dollars in counterfeit bills in their possession.

Further investigation determined that Derek Borcherding printed the fake money from his home computer. In his home, over $1000 dollars in counterfeit money was found in his home along with a paper cutter, resume paper, and a printer.

All three are being charged with forgery. Borcherding and Hall are currently being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center. The teenager is being held at the Hamilton County Detention Center.
