HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - A 5-year-old Hamilton boy is dead after suffering from a gunshot wound.

Hamilton Police say 5-year-old Zachariah Nesbitt died at the Fort Hamilton Hospital. Around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday night, police responded to Gordon Smith Boulevard after police received a 911 call about the child being shot.

An autopsy performed on Monday confirmed the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the frantic 911 call, a male caller says the boy got the gun from a closet. Neighbors say the boy was playing with the gun when it went off.

Neighbor Kenny Benjamin was one of the first people to see Nesbitt after he was shot in the chest.

"My girlfriend's mother was doing CPR on the little boy until the ambulance came and then it drove off," said Benjamin. "I've never seen anything in my life. Its just hard from me to process. I was thinking about it all last night since I've been up, how crazy it is that it happened in this apartment complex."

Hope Lewis says her kids spent nearly every summer day playing with the victim.

"He was really a kind and caring little boy," said Lewis. "My son and little girl just don't understand. I told them sometimes God needs an angel more then we need them here."

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
