SPARTA, KY (FOX19) - A semi truck flipped Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 71 in Gallatin County, killing one person.
Kentucky State Police say the southbound semi truck driven by Samuel Utomi, 42, of Georgia, was carrying pipes when it flipped just north of exit number 63, near Sparta, around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say Utomi lost control and exited the right side of the highway and traveled through the guardrail and over an embankment. The truck tractor and trailer became separated upon contact with the embankment. The truck overturned and came to final rest in a lower drainage ditch near Tapering Pointe Road, where it caught fire as a result of the collision.
Utomi was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
