Hamilton council approves firefighters' budget cut proposal

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - The Hamilton city council voted Wednesday night to approve proposed cuts from the firefighters union.

The city is facing a shortfall of millions of dollars, so they're asking all departments to make cuts.

The firefighters union had some trouble coming up with their share. They were asked to cut $1.9 million, but only came up with about half of that. Council voted Wednesday to accept their proposal anyway.

"We're absolutely at bare bones. We're at one person staffs. We're as bare bones as you can get," said Eric Abney, president of the firefighters union.

Two part time staff members were already let go and the union voted to cut incentives and take unpaid days off.

If the cuts were rejected, the union would have to come up with a revamped proposal.
