BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - A Clermont County man is accused of stealing paving bricks from a memorial for a soldier killed in Iraq.

Police say Francis Fille, 26, stole 148 paving bricks from a memorial for Matt Maupin at East Fork State Park.

Maupin is a soldier from Clermont County who was captured in Iraq in 2004. His remains were found last year near Baghdad.

Police believe Fille took the bricks to use them on a project at his home. He faces theft charges.

"We've been here for a long time, and you know, nobody's ever bothered anything like that before," said Matt's father, Keith. "I just don't understand why someone would do that."

Fille has pleaded not guilty and will be back in court on Friday. He faces a fine of $2,500 and could face jail time for parole violations.
