VERSAILLES, IN (FOX19) - Indiana State Police are warning area residents of a tree trimming scam.

Police say last week, a man approached a residence in Ripley County owned by an elderly widow and told her he was doing some tree trimming in the area for a neighbor. The suspect told the victim he wanted her to shown him the property  line so he wouldn't cut any over her trees by mistake. When the resident and the man were in the back yard, an accomplice entered the residence and stole money and jewelry.

Investigators believe the accomplice was in his vehicle and was signaled by the suspect when it was clear to enter the home.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20's, approximately 5-foot-8, slender build, clean cut, with a "pretty white smile" and wearing a ball cap.

If approached, residents are urged to lock all doors and windows before walking out of the house with the suspect.  If possible, try to get a description and license plate number of the vehicle operated by the suspect.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or other suspicious activity is urged to contact the Indiana State Police at Versailles at (800) 566-6704 (Indiana only) or (812) 689-5000.
