BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - An inmate who escaped from the Boone County Jail on Thursday afternoon is now back in police custody.

Michael Haggard Jr. escaped around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon and held himself up in his sister's home on Avalon Drive in Burlington.

Sheriff's spokesman Tom Scheben says negotiators communicated with the suspect and coaxed him out.

"Point blank he wanted some carpet under his feet - his words," said Sheriff's spokesman Tom Scheben. "And he wanted to smoke a cigarette. You can can only work so much with that."

Avalon Drive was closed during the incident and schools were advised to keep children out of the area.

Michael Haggard was being held on robbery, kidnapping, and burglary charges. He was arrested back in February.
