Erlanger officers to wear body cameras

ERLANGER, KY (FOX19) - The Erlanger Police Department has become the first department in the Tri-State area to use a body worn video camera for all officers.

Officials say the camera is currently the world's smaller digital video camera. It's smaller than a pack of gum and is activated during all officer contact. It can hold up to four hours of video and record for two continuous hours.

Erlanger officers began using the cameras on Sept. 1. The department purchased 50 cameras and rotates them on a shift by shift basis. The recordings are then saved to a department server and held for specific times.

The cameras were purchased with the contribution of a local business partner, who wishes to remain anonymous, for less than $100 per device.

Officials say the immediate benefit is that officers are able to record video and audio when away from the vehicle which was not possible with standard car mounted systems.

Based on Erlanger PD's testing of the device, several other Northern Kentucky departments also made purchases with Erlanger and will be putting the camera to use within their agencies.
