CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A Cincinnati woman was in court Wednesday afternoon on charges that she spanked another woman's child.

According to court documents, Gloria Ballard, 44, spanked the 2-year-old son of a woman she did not know. The mother told police her son said something to Ballard, so she put him over her lap and hit him three times on his rear end. The incident happened Wednesday at a Salvation Army store.

In an affidavit, the mother also claimed Ballard told her, "how and what I should do to take care of my child."

Ballard says the 2-year-old was upset when he was sitting in his mother's lap.

"I say, 'Boo-boo, you OK?'" said Ballard. "He looked up at me and smiled, I tapped him."

Police say Ballard may have been intoxicated.

Ballard faces one count of assault. She faces up to six months in jail if convicted.

Ballard is out of jail on her own recognizance. She was ordered to stay away from the mother and her son.
