CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Should the City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County merge into one government?

As each try to tighten their budgets and fill in devastating gaps, the option is becoming more attractive to some local leaders.

Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Hartmann says there are obvious areas that Cincinnati and Hamilton County can combine departments to save money.

One is the prosecutor's office.

"In felony court, the county prosecutor prosecutes all crime in the city or county," said Hartmann. "This is a big ticket item."

The city prosecutor only handles misdemeanors in the city. Hartmann sent a letter to Mayor Mark Mallory on Wednesday suggesting the savings of having County Prosecutor Joe Deters handle all cases would be significant.

"We have two different communications centers in Hamilton County," said Hartmann. "Makes no sense, costs a lot of money."

Hartmann says the commissioners hope to have a plan in place by the end of the year to consolidate 911 call centers.

"It's archaic and expensive," said Hartmann. "It's a government we can't afford."
