COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - A Kenton County man has pled guilty to breaking into a woman's home and killing her two cats.

Russell Swigart, 31, was supposed to go to trial on burglary and animal cruelty charges. However, a day after a jury was seated for the trial, Swigart pled guilty.

Swigart was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the burglary and two years for killing the cats.

Police say the homeowner was a former employee of Swigart's. He was arrested the morning after the cats were found with a knife covered in cat hair and blood.

Swigart is the first person in Northern Kentucky to be charged under a new law that makes it a felony to torture and kill a cat or dog. The law was signed after someone in southeastern Kentucky videotaped a yellow Labrador retriever being tortured. The law was named after the dog, Romeo.
