CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The trial for suspected serial killer Anthony Kirkland will not begin until next year.

Kirkland was scheduled to go on trial Nov. 2 for the deaths of Esme Kenney, Casonya Crawford, Mary Jo Newton and Kimya Rolison.

However, during a pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, defense attorneys asked for more time to explore possible mental health or other issues with Kirkland that could save him from a death sentence if convicted. The lawyers said they're having trouble because Kirkland's family members won't return phone calls.

Prosecutors did not object to the delay, so Judge Charles Kubicki Jr. agrree to pushed the trial back to March 1, 2010.

Kirkland faces the death penalty if convicted.
