COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Dayton school officials testified Wednesday in the case of former teacher Nicole Howell, who is on trial for allegedly having sex with a student.

One of the day's key witnesses, principal Kirk Hahn, told the court that on Dec. 8, 2008, Howell came to him and reported that she had heard a rumor about her having sex with students.

Hahn's secretary reported hearing the same rumor and he next day he had a talk with the young man in question. Initially, that boy denied the rumors, but the following Monday, the student came back to tell his principal he lied.

"I asked him how it started, and he said one day after school the cheerleaders were in Ms. Howell's room making banners and she left he cell phone laying there, and he picked it up and called his number and that's how he got her number."

Defense attorney Eric Deters asked Hahn if he had heard the rumors before Howell came to him, and he said no.

Hahn left the Dayton district last year to take the principal's job at Nelson County High School.

Also on the stand Wednesday was Dayton superintendent Gary Ryan, who testified that Howell never complained about a student contacting her inappropriately.

Howell could take the stand when the defense takes over the trial, which is expected to be on Thursday.
