CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The 8th Street Viaduct is now reopen after over a year of construction and repair.

Crews have replaced 22 of the 78 piers that are part of the bridge's support structure. Beams and other piers were repaired. The road surface and sidewalks are also new, and new lighting and siderails have been installed.

The $24 million project used 1.8 million pounds of reinforcing steel and about 7,000 cubic yards of new concrete. An additional 70,000 square feet of concrete was patched.

Work will continue on the structure, but not affect vehicle, pedestrian or bicycle traffic.

The opening was marked with a ceremony Thursday morning with Mayor Mark Mallory and other state and local officials. About 100 students from Oyler Elementary brought a banner for officials to cut during the reopening.

The viaduct was built in 1929 and is the second-oldest viaduct still in use in Cincinnati.
