Veterans storm township meeting after trustee's comment

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -  A local trustee's comment about the Vietnam War leads a group of veterans to storm the township hall.

At a Meet The Candidates forum, current Goshen Township trustee T.J. Corcoran compared raising his teenage daughter to serving in a war.

He says it was meant as a joke. His daughter was in the audience, and several people chuckled at the comment. But a group of veterans attended Tuesday night's meeting wanting answers.

"I wanted to ask the man and I couldn't, 'Was his daughter shooting at him? Was his daughter trying to blow him up?'" said VFW Vice Commander David Conley.

Corcoran says he tried to explain the context of the comment to those who didn't attend the forum.

"I tried to resolve this several times with those that were offended and those names were not provided to me," Corcoran said. "I'd like to talk to them one and one to explain the context."

Conley says the comment isn't funny, regardless of how the statement was meant.

"I got so hot it was because of this," said Conley, holding up a photograph. "These are the seven of our classmates that we went to school with that went to Vietnam that didn't come back."

"I absolutely was not making an serious comparison to our Veterans," said Corcoran. "That's nonsense."

Tuesday's township meeting was adjourned during the public comment period because of all the outbursts.
