Mother of toddler found near candy store arrested

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police have arrested an Indianapolis woman whose 1-year-old daughter was found wandering outside a candy store over the weekend. Tuesday House was arrested Monday and charged with child neglect.

Sgt. Matthew Mount says the 38-year-old House admitted leaving the child behind in her house Saturday evening so she could go out drinking and use drugs. Her daughter walked alone toward a candy shop, where two alarmed customers took her into the store about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The child went unclaimed for more than 24 hours, despite a door-to-door canvass by police and neighbors. She was identified only after relatives came forward the next night after seeing the baby's photograph on the late television news.

The child is in the custody of child protective services.
